Techbridge

I LOVED working at Techbridge. The work was so rewarding and fun. And I found that I was surprisingly good at what I was asked to do. I had never worked with teenage girls or with visually impaired kids, but somehow I could deduce creative ways to present them with information and opportunities to learn a new skill or two.

The day finally came. After I left Techbridge the team put in some good elbow grease into the lesson plans I developed with Marcia Vickroy and Linda Kekelis (not name dropping, just giving props). The resource guide is called Explore It After School!

I must say I am pretty proud of myself. My Master's thesis (Sisterhood: A Technology-Enhanced Community Organizing Model) was "published" in 2003 and now this in 2006. It motivates me to do produce Equivalent 2.0 and to focus on populating my On Women and Technology blog.

Online Activism - the software is getting better

Lots of open source projects are focusing on ways of bringing people together in "social networks." Like all things high-tech, this idea of full of jargon. For now, I just want to consider options.

Walkout

"Edward James Olmos directs this HBO Films drama that tells the true but little-known story of a group of Chicano students who staged a compelling 1968 walkout to protest the injustices of the public high-school system in East Los Angeles. Starring Alexa Vega as Paula Crisostomo, an idealistic honor student who refuses to "play it safe" in a school system that clearly discriminates against Chicanos, instead banding with a group of activists to coordinate a multi- school walkout of students. Mentored by her charismatic teacher Sal Castro (Michael Peña), Paula learns that sometimes the price for progress is high -- but it's ultimately worth paying."

READING * WRITING * REVOLUTION
It premiers Saturday, March 18th at 8:00pm on HBO.

Mil gracias to Senor Olmos who keeps fans the flames of the Chicano movement.
